Welcome to the Nausea with or without vomiting Forum

jay said 1 year, 5 months ago ago:

thanks! I’m definitely a puker! Anyone else?

Diana Lee said 1 year, 5 months ago ago:

Oh yes, definitely me! Zofran has been a godsend for me in dealing with this. It doesn’t help 100% of the time, but has made it much easier to deal with the nausea and prevent the vomiting.

Ellen said 1 year, 5 months ago ago:

Oh boy. I would rather do anything than vomit, but it hits me all too often. Unfortunately, I have a co-morbidity that keeps me from being able to use anti-nausea medication. Zofran may be an option for me, but right now we’re keeping it in our back pocket as I may have had a post-surgical adverse reaction to it as well. Ginger and/or diazepam helps, but mostly I just hang on for dear life.

Sometimes, I think I’d feel better if I COULD vomit. Several years ago, I had surgery for GERD. Now the valve at the top of my stomach is so tight that noting can come back up through it. The instant I know I have a Migraine coming on, I reach for my nausea meds! Otherwise, I end up with dry heaves that, as all of you know, make my head hurt so much worse.

@Ellen? Ever try Emend for nausea? Granted, it knocks me out for a loop, but when even my trusted Zofran isn’t cutting it, this thing WILL kill the nausea.

Not surprising, as it’s used in cancer settings to allow for nausea-free chemo cycles…I’m lucky my insurance will pay for a few tabs/month w/o a pre auth for just “severe nausea and vomiting.” I was pretty shocked, actually.

haven’t had to use it in months, but… just knowing that I have it in my toolbox.. well, that’s reassuring!

Ellen said 1 year, 4 months ago ago:

Jamie, I’ll have to look that one up. I don’t think it’s one I’ve tried, but may be in the no-no family of meds I have to avoid. Thanks for mentioning it. I’ll do a little research and get back to let you know what I found :)

Teri,

I have LPR and a hiatal hernia, and they’ve talked about that surgery too. I am trying hard NOT to have to go that route, but some days it’s so *hard*. When they told me about not being able to vomit (although a couple people I know still can) it scared me a little. I didn’t ask a lot of questions because I am so opposed to any more surgeries. May I ask… if you’re a Migraineur who can’t vomit, do you just dry-heave over and over? Does anything else happen?

Oh, what a choice to make – damaged esophagus, larnyx etc… or this. Ugh.

Yep…and it doesnt go away after the 1st “throw up” last all day!! and when theres nothing left….just dry heaves… I HATE THIS!!!There is a suspostory that I take and 3/4 of the time it stops me frojm throwing up!! every year I end up in the er because the meds will just not work!!

WildZan said 1 year, 4 months ago ago:

I am one of those idiots that would rather have their finger nails pulled out than to throw up…I HATE it! I don’t always have nausea with a migraine, but when I do, even the thought of vomiting can almost cause a panic attack. At first tho doc prescribed a suppository (I can’t remember what it was called, a very common anti-nausea drug) but we found out that it doesn’t work on me at all. Zofran works well, but my insurance won’t pay for it because I am not having chemo, go figure.

Then, of all people, my DENTIST told me to try a scopalomine patch. It’s what he uses when he has a migraine. Works like a DREAM! See an aura, slap on a patch, and I am good. Now, why on earth would a motion-sickness patch work?

Ellen said 1 year, 4 months ago ago:

WildZan – I have a tendency to go with the flow – if it’s workin’ well, I’m great with that! :)

Teri Robert said 1 year, 4 months ago ago:

Ellen,

Sorry to be so long replying. Yes, I would dry-heave over and over, which makes my head hurt worse during a Migraine. For this reason, I always take an antinausea med as soon as I realize I’m getting hit with a Migraine. I have both oral and injectable Reglan in case I don’t catch it in time to keep the oral down.

Seriously, this is one of the worst parts of a Migraine for me. So many times, I think I’d feel better if I could just vomit. UGH!

sdavis said 1 year ago ago:

Just wondering if anyone else has experienced a change in their migraines before? I never used to have nausea but in the last few months the nausea is a constant and vomiting. I can’t eat while I have a migraine but if I take Zofran on an empty stomach I “always” vomit.. but I do sometimes feel better if I can vomit and the nausea stops.. My migraines are just evolving so fast, could have done without the nausea/vomiting part, the pain was more then enough!

Have a good night!

sdavis: A good rule of thumb is that if your Migraine attacks are changing, you should consider getting in to see your doctor to discuss those changes. It’s possible something else has changed with your health that is now impacting your Migraine attacks. Your triggers may have changed. It could just be a change in your Migraine pattern as well, but it’s smart to be sure.

That said, many patients will experience a change in their pattern as time goes on. While this is not uncommon, it is definitely a reason to get to the doctor…

I vomit every migraine, which is almost every day… and when I start vomitting… I don’t stop. I will vomit ever 5-10 minutes for a full day or days.. which yes, increases the pain so much! I have oral Zofran but when I can’t catch it in time there is no hope (plus the ER gives that IV all the time so I believe I’m building up immunity and my insurance decided to suddenly stop paying for it) I also have phenergan suppositories, but I have to be careful with those because I’m allergic to Compazine and Reglan and that’s in the same family. I just got prescribed Tigan pills and suppositories but my mom is a nurse and we are really hoping to find something injectable… the suppositories are not fun (I’m willing to do it if they worked every time) but they don’t always work… which is how I often end up in the hospital! Does anyone know anything that comes injectable (besides the Reglan I read in a previous post- allergic to that!)
